Special Working Bee - 27 June

Thanks to all those who have been able to take part in our month of
planting grasses and sedges.

It has been very successful on wet days and very wet days!

The Rangers were out today planting and preparing planting holes for
us.
 

So if you are willing and able we will have another special working
bee this Saturday, 27 June to finish the planting, this should give them
a good chance with good rains we have had early in the season.
 

We will be planting around the bridge of the creek near the Riding
Club and the trailer will be parked near the Riding Club, meet there at
8.45 am or at the gate.

June Working Bee

The next working bee is on Saturday, 6 June and we will be planting in the area adjacent the carpark. Meet in the Ayliffes Road carpark at 8.50 am.

Park of The Month Event

Hope you are able to come and help with this event. 30 people have booked in to the programme, which is:

10.00 am Welcome and introduction

10.30 am - 11.00 am walk with me (Robyn) Discovering  the Grasses

11-11.30 am Treasure Hunt 

11.30 am - 12.15 pm Nature’s Art Gallery with Ann Prescott (maximum 15 people )

12.30 pm BBQ lunch 

12.45 pm Presentations and thankyou 

1.00 pm Close 

We may need several people to be on the gate (taking it in turns). Ron is bringing a Gazebo and Justin will organise one more 

Justin is buying food for the BBQ. Please bring extra chairs if you have them.Sudhashree, Kelly and Sue are organising the Childfens activities

May Working Bee #2

The next working bee is on Saturday, 17 May meeting at 8.45 am in the Ayliffes Road car park. The contractors have done a lot of work at the junction of Wattiparringa and Walkers creek, so we will work in this area on Olives, etc. The trailer will be inside the park adjacent the entrance of the car park. You can bring your vehicle through to the trailer if that suits.

May Working Bee

The next working bee is on Saturday, 2 May. (Committee please note we are meeting at 8.30 in the car park to discuss the new flyer and also preparation for our Park of the Month event on 24 May.)  The trailer will be on the Ridge track near the Sheoaks and work will be on the South side of the track dealing with Boneseed and north of the Riidge Track treating Olives.

Please note that rain is forecast for Saturday. Please check your email in case we need to cancel the working bee.

April Working Bee #2

The next working bee is on Saturday, 18 April. Meet in the Ayliffes Road Car Park at 8.50 am. The trailer will be parked at the junction of the Ridge and Viaduct Tracks. We will continue work on Olives and Boneseed.

Shepherds Hill Recreation Park is the PARK OF THE MONTH for May.

(This is the notice that we have been sent to “What’s  on in Waite“ for next month’s edition.)

Join the Friends of Shepherds Hill Recreation Park on Sunday, 24 May for a morning of Family activities, drawing in nature, and a supplied lunch!

​

Take part in a guided drawing course with Ann Prescott, finding inspiration in the sound and sights of the surrounding bush. Ann has extensive experience working with and studying the flora of South Australia and is well known for her publication It's Blue with Five Petals.

​​

Explore this hidden gem on a family walk and discover not only the beautiful vulnerable Grey Box grassy woodland habitat which covers the region, but also the Grasses project led by the Friends of Shepherds Hill Recreation Park.

​

There will be lots of fun for children available too including a treasure hunt and colouring competition.

 

A BBQ lunch will be provided following the activities.

​

The Friends of Shepherds Hill was formed in 1999 to conduct important conservation work within the Shepherd Hill Recreation Park. It supports Park management by removing weeds such as olives, broom and boneseed and by revegetating areas with native species grown from locally collected seed.

All drawing equipment will be provided.

Happy Easter! Join us this Saturday (4 April) and particularly the Committee as we are having a special meeting about the new flyer, amongst other things, at morning tea time.

March Working Bee #2

The next working bee is on Saturday, 21 March. Meet in the Ayliffes Road Car park at 8.50 am. We will continue working where we left off last time in zone 5 on Boneseed and extending the work done by contractors recently along the Viaduct track.

March Working Bee

The next working bee is this Saturday (7 March). We will be working in the area where work has just been completed by the Contractor for the latest Friends of Parks and Nature Grant. The trailer will be parked at the junction of Ridge Track and Viaduct Track.

February Working Bee #2 - not happening

It was suggested and agreed by those present at the last working bee that we have two working bees every month. As the forecast temperature for this Saturday is 37 degrees, it will not happen this month.

February Working Bee

UPDATE: As the forecast temperature is to be 35 degrees we will be finishing the working bee at 11.00 am. Ron will take the trailer to the work site at 8.30 am but we will meet people in the car park as usual at 8.50am. The Committee meeting will therefore start at 11.30 am.

Our first working bee for the year is on Saturday, 7 February (weather permitting). Meet in the Ayliffes Road car park at 8.50 am. We recently were successful in getting a grant for a Contractor to treat Olives in the area to the west of where we planted grasses last year. We are required to make a contribution to this project so will be doing some work here also. We will be watering the grasses planted last year in the area adjacent to the Archery Club Rooms. The trailer will be parked in the Archery car park. Look forward to seeing you there.

Welcome!

Welcome to 2026 and another year of work in restoration of Shepherds Hill Recreation Park to a Grey Box Grassy Woodland. Congratulations to Robyn and Justin for securing another Friends of Parks & Nature grant for work adjacent to our current grant area West of Eden Field Archers. The grant also included a Rabbit program, there are a lot of Bunnies in the river bank burrows. We enter the second year of the Urban Rivers and Catchment Program. This is a 4 year Commonwealth grant. As a result of our recent reporting on progress I received an email from Senior Program Officer from Biodiversity Division Canberra to say progress is a good news story that they really appreciate and will share it with other departments After quite a lot of Olive treatment work, understory weed spraying and follow brush cutting by contractors , the lower section of Watiparinga Creek is looking really good and significant improvements have been made.
