November Working Bee

The next working bee is on Saturday, 7 November. Work will be on Olives at the junction of Walkers Creek and the Ridge track. We will also be spraying Bridal Creeper. Meet as usual in the Ayliffes Road Car park at 8.50 am.

October Working Bee #2

Our next working bee is Saturday, 17 October. Meet at the carpark gate Ayliffes Road at 8.50 am or at 9.00 am up on the Ridge track near intersection of Walkers Creek track and Maggies seat.

Our recent working bees have been successful in treating many large Boneseed on the hill face, south of the Archery club. We plan to complete that program and also work on Olives, etc. south of the Ridge track.

September Working Bee #2

The next working bee is this Saturday, meet as usual in the Ayliffes Road Car Park at 8.50 am. Work will be on Boneseed on the hillside opposite the Archery area. The trailer will be parked at the Archery Car Park.

September Working Bee

There is a working bee this Saturday (5 September). There is some large flowering Boneseed in Zone 5 opposite the Archery. We have hecked these and there is a large infestation beyond our resources, so we will leave that for the time being. We will do Brushcutting in Zone 4 with a couple of other people who could work in that area. Otherwise, it will be Olives and the trailer will be up near Maggies seat. Meet as usual at 8.50 am in the Ayliffes Road car park. There could be showers, so come prepared.

Special Request
This week Mint Green Contractors are cutting Olives and large Box Thorns for burning at the end of Watiparringga creek near the car park. This is part of the work for our Urban Rivers Grant. The Rangers would appreciate any help by carting cut down material directly on to the fires. The fires will be managed by Park Rangers. RM plans to get down there tomorrow morning (Tuesday, 1 September). If you could spare some time Tuesday or Wednesday to help out it would be a great support. Bring your gloves and safety glasses, etc.

August Working Bee #2

The next working bee is on Saturday, 15 August. Meet in the Ayliffes Road Car Park at 8.50 am and the trailer will be parked near the Pony Club.

Work will involve inserting stakes where grasses were planted along the creek (so that they don’t get poisoned when the Contractor sprays the weeds), and pulling up Nasturtium plants. One of us will be using the “Tongs of Death“ to kill some more Cape Weed in Zone 4 and one or two people could do weeding there as well. As you can imagine the ground is very wet so if you have rubber boots it would be a good idea to bring them. The weather is looking good for Saturday so hope to see you there.

The next working bee for the Friends of Shepherds Hill Recreation Park is this Saturday, 1 August. Meet in the Ayliffes Road car park at 8.50 am .  The trailer will be on the top of the Ridge Track and work will be on Olives on the Southern side of the Ridge track.

July Working Bee #2

The next working bee is on Saturday, 18 July; meet in the Ayliffes Road car park and the trailer will be half way along the top of the Ridge Track.

Green Adelaide is going to pay for a Contractor to spray the Lavender soon so we won’t do that. The Boneseed will be the main target in zone 5. We will need three helpers in Zone 4 to do some direct seeding, poisoning Cape Tulip, and some other tasks. Weather looks good for Saturday.

July Working Bee #1

There are another 100 plants to be planted this Saturday. The weather looks reasonable at this stage.

So meet as usual at 8.50 am in the Ayliffes Road Car park. There will be some planting near the car park and some in zone 4

​Message of Thanks!

Thanks to all those who have been able to take part in our month of

planting grasses and sedges. It has been very successful on wet days

and very wet days! The Rangers were out today planting and

preparing planting holes for us. So if you are willing and able we will

have another special working bee this Saturday, 27 June to finish the

planting, this should give them a good chance with good rains we

have had early in the season. We will be planting around the bridge

of the creek near the Riding Club and the trailer will be parked near

the Riding Club, meet thereat 8.45 am or at the gate.

June Working Bee #2

The next working bee this Saturday, 20 June we will be planting Carex adpressa (160 plant)s and Carex tereticornis (100 plants) and possibly some Acacias. 

Meet as usual in the car park on Ayliffes Road at 8.50 am. Planting will begin in the area adjacent to the BMX track. It will probably be raining a bit but not like last Saturday. (Rubber boots if you have them.)

Special Event

A couple of us are going planting in Shepherds Hill Recreation Park this Saturday (13 June) and would really appreciate some help.  

It is not in the creek this time. Some on the banks and some in zone 4. Some of the plants that have been grown, incude some Lillies and some Grasses. Altogether about 200+ plants.

We will bring tools and guards, etc. It is forecast to be wet so come prepared ( It will still go ahead in the rain)

There are another 1000 plants to go in and the Rangers will be doing approx 500 on 24 June when our help would be appreciated. This is part of the Urban Rivers Grant and it is necessary for the Friends to contribute to this.

We may need several people to be on the gate (taking it in turns). Ron is bringing a Gazebo and Justin will organise one more

May Working Bee #2

The next working bee is on Saturday, 17 May meeting at 8.45 am in the Ayliffes Road car park. The contractors have done a lot of work at the junction of Wattiparringa and Walkers creek, so we will work in this area on Olives, etc. The trailer will be inside the park adjacent the entrance of the car park. You can bring your vehicle through to the trailer if that suits.

May Working Bee

The next working bee is on Saturday, 2 May. (Committee please note we are meeting at 8.30 in the car park to discuss the new flyer and also preparation for our Park of the Month event on 24 May.)  The trailer will be on the Ridge track near the Sheoaks and work will be on the South side of the track dealing with Boneseed and north of the Riidge Track treating Olives.

Please note that rain is forecast for Saturday. Please check your email in case we need to cancel the working bee.

Shepherds Hill Recreation Park is the PARK OF THE MONTH for May.

(This is the notice that we have been sent to “What’s  on in Waite“ for next month’s edition.)

Join the Friends of Shepherds Hill Recreation Park on Sunday, 24 May for a morning of Family activities, drawing in nature, and a supplied lunch!

​

Take part in a guided drawing course with Ann Prescott, finding inspiration in the sound and sights of the surrounding bush. Ann has extensive experience working with and studying the flora of South Australia and is well known for her publication It's Blue with Five Petals.

​​

Explore this hidden gem on a family walk and discover not only the beautiful vulnerable Grey Box grassy woodland habitat which covers the region, but also the Grasses project led by the Friends of Shepherds Hill Recreation Park.

​

There will be lots of fun for children available too including a treasure hunt and colouring competition.

 

A BBQ lunch will be provided following the activities.

​

The Friends of Shepherds Hill was formed in 1999 to conduct important conservation work within the Shepherd Hill Recreation Park. It supports Park management by removing weeds such as olives, broom and boneseed and by revegetating areas with native species grown from locally collected seed.

​​

All drawing equipment will be provided.

The next working bee is on Saturday, 21 March. Meet in the Ayliffes Road Car park at 8.50 am. We will continue working where we left off last time in zone 5 on Boneseed and extending the work done by contractors recently along the Viaduct track.

February Working Bee #2 - not happening

It was suggested and agreed by those present at the last working bee that we have two working bees every month. As the forecast temperature for this Saturday is 37 degrees, it will not happen this month.

February Working Bee

UPDATE: As the forecast temperature is to be 35 degrees we will be finishing the working bee at 11.00 am. Ron will take the trailer to the work site at 8.30 am but we will meet people in the car park as usual at 8.50am. The Committee meeting will therefore start at 11.30 am.

Our first working bee for the year is on Saturday, 7 February (weather permitting). Meet in the Ayliffes Road car park at 8.50 am. We recently were successful in getting a grant for a Contractor to treat Olives in the area to the west of where we planted grasses last year. We are required to make a contribution to this project so will be doing some work here also. We will be watering the grasses planted last year in the area adjacent to the Archery Club Rooms. The trailer will be parked in the Archery car park. Look forward to seeing you there.

Welcome!

Welcome to 2026 and another year of work in restoration of Shepherds Hill Recreation Park to a Grey Box Grassy Woodland. Congratulations to Robyn and Justin for securing another Friends of Parks & Nature grant for work adjacent to our current grant area West of Eden Field Archers. The grant also included a Rabbit program, there are a lot of Bunnies in the river bank burrows. We enter the second year of the Urban Rivers and Catchment Program. This is a 4 year Commonwealth grant. As a result of our recent reporting on progress I received an email from Senior Program Officer from Biodiversity Division Canberra to say progress is a good news story that they really appreciate and will share it with other departments After quite a lot of Olive treatment work, understory weed spraying and follow brush cutting by contractors , the lower section of Watiparinga Creek is looking really good and significant improvements have been made.
