From the Minister

Supporting environmental volunteers

This month the new Landscape South Australia Act, 2019 has come into effect as the key framework for managing the state’s land, water, pest plants and animals, and biodiversity across the state.

As part of this process, eight new regional landscape boards have been established and a new entity - Green Adelaide - has been created to bring an integrated approach to managing Adelaide’s urban environment.

The landscape SA reform is all about delivering a more effective, decentralised, back-to-basics system that gives local communities a greater voice in natural resources management and puts more resources ‘on-the-ground’.

This reform will see important improvements in the way we support on-ground environmental volunteers.

From mid-July local volunteer groups, whether they are working in our Parks or elsewhere in the landscape, will be able to apply for funding from a new $2 million Grassroots Grants program.

It is my expectation that the Grassroots Grants program will be a simple and straightforward process by which you can access the resources you need to continue your important work.

In addition to the Grassroots Grants program delivering financial support to environmental volunteer groups, there will be some refinements to the way volunteer groups will be supported across the landscape. Landscape boards will continue to support off-park volunteer groups in their region through volunteer support officers, and the National Parks and Wildlife Service South Australia is committed to supporting groups operating on-park through the relevant rangers.

Volunteer groups will be well supported into the future, and I have instructed landscape board Chairs and the Executive Director of the National Parks and Wildlife Service SA to ensure individual volunteer groups are contacted as a matter of urgency to ensure a smooth transition to the new support arrangements.

For more information on the grassroots grants, regional boundaries, and a full list of landscape board members, please visit www.landscape.sa.gov.au.

I look forward to working alongside you as we work towards the implementation of a new era in sustainable landscape management.

March & April Working Bees

Following a straw poll, there is a small preference to bring the March working bee forward to 27 February and a more-pronounced preference to move the first April working bee forward from the Easter weekend to 27 March. Both working bees will therefore be brought forward.

27 Feb - Meet at the Ayliffes Road car park at 8.50am or at the work site at 9.00am. We'll return to Zone 1 to consolidate the start we made at the last working bee on the woody weeds near Walkers Creek. February Working Bee...

Happy New Year everyone,

We hope you have all had an enjoyable holiday season and are looking forward to a year with less drama than the last one.

The first working bee of the year will kick off on Saturday, 6 February, and be followed by a Committee Meeting to review our plans for the year and discuss any current issues. If you have any issues you'd like the Committee to consider, please provide details to the President or Secretary, or any of the Committee members.

Meet in the Ayliffes Road car park at 8.50 am or at the work site at 9.00 am. We'll be working on olives and other woody weeds in the creek line near the Pony Club and the trailer will be located at the Pony Club.

Social distancing rules will continue to apply.

The weather forecast for Saturday is for possible showers in the morning so there is a possibility we may need to cancel the working bee and bring forward the Committee Meeting planned to follow it.

Our Annual General Meeting at Blackwood Uniting was to have been held on Wednesday, 10 February, but, due to the unavailability of the venue on that day, has been rescheduled to Tuesday, 9 February, so please make the change in your calendar. Agendas and minutes have been emailed to all.
