Notice - our 2014 AGM is scheduled for Wednesday, 12 February

December Working Bee

Our next working bee and the last for the year, will be on Saturday, 7 December. Meet at the Ayliffes Road car park at 8.50 am or at the work site. We'll be working in the Triangle area along the Viaduct Track between the Watiparinga boundary and the ford over the creek. The trailer will be located at the junction of the Ridge and Viaduct Tracks near the ford.

We have a range of weeds to deal with including Tangier pea and nasturtium to be hand pulled, broom to be hand pulled or cut and swabbed and a small amount of phallaris which can be sprayed or cut and swabbed.

Robyn is keen to get the group's thoughts on track rationalisation in the park, particularly on unsustainable tracks which should be closed. This issue will be discussed at morning tea time, extended if necessary to deal with the topic. So come prepared to have your say.

We'll be working once again at the eastern junction between the Viaduct and Ridge Tracks near the ford. September Working Bee #2

Our next working bee will be on Saturday, 21 September. Meet at the Ayliffes Road car park at 8.50 am or at the work site. We'll return to the triangle area to clear more of the White Fumitory which is choking the native species in the area which was burnt last year. There are also woody weeds to be treated in the creek line towards the archery. The trailer will be located at the track junction near the Wattiparringga Creek ford.

Note that the track from the western junction of the Viaduct and Ridge Tracks to the archery area has been resurfaced with gravel and should no longer be slippery.

September Working Bee

The next working bee will be on Saturday, 7 September. Meet at the Ayliffes Road car park at 8.50 am or at the work site. The archery club has arranged for the track between the western junction of the Viaduct and Ridge Tracks and the archery to be resurfaced on Saturday morning to make it an all-weather road so that access to the road past the archery will not be available. We therefore plan to locate the trailer in the flat area to the east of the pony club and work on woody weeds north from that point.
2/09/2013

August Working Bee #2

Our next working bee will be on Saturday, 17 August. Meet at the Ayliffes Road car park at 8.50 am or at the work site. We will be working on follow-up in the triangle area and pushing the weed front down the creek towards the Archery Club. The trailer will be at the Junction of the Viaduct and Ridge Tracks near the ford.

August Working Bee

Our next working bee will be on Saturday, 3 August. Meet at the Ayliffes Road car park at 8.50 am or at the work site. Following the cancellation of our last working bee due to the particularly inclement weather, we will once again attempt to plant the remaining trees for this year in an area to the south of the Ridge Track and, having accomplished that, work on woody weeds in the surrounding area. The trailer will be located at the junction of the Ridge and Walkers Creek Tracks.

July Working Bee #2

In view of the extremely inclement (and cold) weather forecast for tomorrow, it has been decided to cancel the working bee.

20/07/2013

Weather permitting, our next working bee will be on Saturday, 20 July. Meet at the Ayliffes Road car park at 8.50 am or at the work site. We have 23 trees to plant on the south-facing slope to the south of the Ridge Track and, having done that, we can work on the olives and other weeds in that area. The trailer will be parked near the junction of the Ridge and Walkers Creek Tracks at the top of the hill.
16/07/2013

July Working Bee

Our next working bee will be held on Saturday, 6 July. Meet at the Ayliffes Road car park at 8.50 am or at the work site. We have up to about 80 trees left to plant and will continue planting them in the gaps between the olives on the north-facing slope below the Ridge Track. If we finish planting before it's time to knock off, we can start drilling and filling the olives closest to the new trees. The trailer will be located near the rocky outcrop at the top of the Ridge Track.

June Working Bee - TakeTwo

Our next working bee will be on Saturday, 15 June. Meet at the Ayliffes Road car park at 8.50 am or at the work site. The trailer should be parked on the Ridge Track near the junction with the Walkers Creek Track.

31/05/2013
Our next working bee will be on Saturday, 1 June. Meet at the Ayliffes Road car park at 8.50 am or at the work site. This time we'll be returning to the triangle area for more follow-up woody weed control along both sides of the creek; scabious and plantain control along the Viaduct Track and, time permitting, continuing to push the weed front downstream of the ford. The trailer will be located at the junction of the Ridge and Viaduct Tracks near the ford.
28/05/2013

May Working Bee #2

The next working bee will be on Saturday, 18 May. Meet at the Ayliffes Road car park at 8.50 am or at the work site. We will continue to work near the creek line to the north of the Sewer Easement Track. Because of the recent rain, the track from the Ellis Avenue gate to the Sewer Easement Track will be too slippery to get the trailer to its usual location. Instead it will be located on the Boundary Track below Ellis Avenue just to the south of the work site where there is a cleared area wide enough to turn the tow vehicle and trailer.
14/05/2013

May Working Bee

March Working Bee

The next working bee will be on Saturday, 2 March. Meet at the Ayliffes Road car park at 8.50 am or at the work site.

This working bee has been registered as a Parks Week event in which members of the public are invited to participate. Copies of the poster (see below) are being displayed at the Mitcham and Blackwood libraries to publicise the event and leaflets will be disributed to local residents.

We will be working closer to the Ayliffes Road car park than usual in an area near the creek to the east of the Viaduct Track near the Pony Club. The work will include drilling and filling olives and cutting and swabbing rice millet and scabious.

What is Parks Week?

It is an annual celebration of the important role that our parks play in contributing to the health of our communities. A range of formal and informal events take place across Australia and New Zealand during Parks Week - there is something for everyone.

Parks Week aims to:

  • Highlight and celebrate the important role parks play - across people, communities, and the natural environment

  • Encourage greater use of parks

  • Celebrate the contribution that volunteers make to parks

  • Promote the healthy parks, healthy people message

  • Promote park management agencies and the work they do.

So, if you are a nearby resident (or even live further away) and want to contribute to preserving our local environment.... have we got a deal for you!
